P525 Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM)

In its continuing effort to offer advanced measurement capabilities for the Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS), Quantum Design has introduced the P525 PPMS Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) application. The addition of the VSM to the current list of PPMS measurement applications makes this exceptionally versatile materials characterization system even more powerful.

The P525 option provides fully automated VSM measurements to be performed utilizing the PPMS temperature-field platform. The system consists of the following major components:

Novel linear motor sample drive
Special low-mass sample rod/holder assembly
Sample rod guide tube
Special puck-mounted detection coil-set
A separate electronics expansion module containing innovative CAN architecture
Software module that integrates into the PPMS software package allowing the user to set up and perform VSM measurements as a completely automated procedure



The system is designed to be user-installable and compatible with existing PPMS systems. Upgrading an existing system will therefore be a simple process. Like the other PPMS applications, the VSM is inserted into the PPMS and used only when needed.


PPMS system properties

Temperature range: 1.9 K – 400 K
Magnetic field: up to 16 tesla
Temperature and magnetic field may be ramped during the measurement


Geometry

Configuration: magnetic field parallel to vibration; first order gradiometer coils
Coil-set bore: 6.3 mm
Coil-set baseline: 9 mm


VSM measurement parameters (typical)

VSM oscillation frequency): 40 Hz
VSM oscillation amplitude: 4 mm peak-peak
Data rate and averaging window: 1 Hz


Sensitivity using the above typical parameters

rms sensitivity: < 10-6 emu or 0.5%
Noise floor: 6 x 10-7 emu rms at H = 0
Accuracy: 0.5 %, using 2.8 mm diameter x 4 mm high cylinder (shape of Pd standard) or < 5 x 10-6 emu/tesla; typically < 2 x 10-6 emu/tesla
Largest measurable moment: 120 emu (40 Hz, 0.25 mm peak-peak)


Oven Option for VSM

The P527 VSM oven option uses a heater and thermocouple integrated into the vibrating sample rod. A standard VSM detection coilset is used and the sample chamber maintained at 300 K in a high vacuum state. The oven allows stable temperature control from 300 K to 1000 K with a minimum detectable moment of < 1-5 emu rms (at H = 0).

A modular design allows the heater/thermometer sample holder to be easily removed from the rod for sample changing. The special rod will have wire feedthroughs for the heater, thermocouple and a thermistor. The heated region is wrapped in low emissivity copper foil to minimize heat leak from the hot region to the surrounding coilset.
