Thermal Wave Imaging

To date, the most common non-destructive methods to test materials were x-ray and ultrasound. Both these procedures have their disadvantages in industrial testing and analysis, including speed of analysis and the level of user skill required. The EchoTherm™ from Thermal Wave Imaging (TWI) addresses both these issues, putting a fast and powerful NDT tool in the hand of operators rather than NDT specialists for the first time.

The EchoTherm™ works by using impulse thermography. Heat is applied to the sample using a xenon flash lamp and the dissipation of heat is then tracked using a high speed thermal imaging camera, such as the Merlin Mid from Indigo Systems.

A good weld or bond will see heat dissipated rapidly through the sample, whereas a defect will retain the heat for longer. Software included in the package enables pictures for evaluation to be acquired automatically and optimised to show areas of interest. The process can be automated to allow 100% checking as part of the manufacturing process.

The ability of infrared imaging methods to inspect large areas quickly, without the necessity of contact or immersion, make them attractive alternatives to point measurement techniques such as ultrasound, eddy current, or non-imaging radiometry.

TWI's latest product is the ThermoScope™, a portable complete system which together with an infrared camera automatically analyses and evaluates data using simple button controls. The LCD on the compact inspection head lets you bring the solution right to the problem. Integrating an innovative flash heating system with state-of-the-art analysis capabilities and the latest in focal plane array technology, adds up to an IR non-destructive evaluation system which has never been easier to use.

The software is extremely powerful and easy to operate, and designed to allow the inspection to be performed quickly and efficiently. Results are presented to the operator immediately so that the production process can be adjusted if necessary.

TWI have been working in the area of IR-NDT for many years and are the market leaders in the USA. Their EchoTherm IR NDT system is widely used in the automobile (Ford, General Motors, Daimler Chrysler, and Nissan) and aerospace (Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Northrop Grumman and NASA) industries, and for a broad range of industrial applications such as testing of solar cells, printed circuit boards and pipeline inspection. Find out how the EchoTherm™ and ThermoScope™ could change your approach to NDT.
