Characterisation of solar cells – Quantum efficiency measurements

In today’s rapidly evolving markets for solar cells, the characterisation of the spectral response (quantum efficiency) is one of the most important parameters for research and development of new materials and devices but also for production and quality control. Today still 90% of the solar cells manufactured around the world are single junction silicon devices; therefore the layout of a spectral response measurement system is relatively simple and straightforward.

However, the most promising research areas focus on different devices and materials, e.g. thin film and 3rd generation devices, which require a different layout of a spectral response characterisation system.

To meet these requirements we offer SPEQUEST, an all-in-one solution for measuring the absolute Spectral Response and Quantum Efficiency for any type of solar cell.

The basic version uses an Lot-Oriel Omni 150 monochromator and halogen light source, chopper, lock-in amplifier, and data acquisition system. The sample is placed on a vacuum chuck for easy use.

Schematic system layout for spectral response characterisation system

As we put high attention to modularity the system can be supplemented with the following extinction modules to:

Use simultaneous measurement of the reference and actual solar cell;
Determine the QE/SR of multi-junction cells;
Measure the reflectivity to establish the internal QE;
Determine the temperature dependence of the QE.
Variety of monochromatic light sources to cover the complete spectral range form 200 - 2,500 nm

Additionally, appropriate reference cells and custom-made probestations/chucks can be provided on request.

The core of SPEQUEST is the provided Software package PHOTOR. This is a powerful interface to operate the system and analyse your data. It has been specifically developed for the measurement and characterisation of the spectral response of solar cells and devices. PHOTOR was developed using the latest Microsoft.NET technology resulting in a modern “Microsoft Office 2007” look and feel.

It operates under Windows. The support of other platforms such as Linux and MacOS is currently under development. The algorithms used in PHOTOR meet all IEC standards for spectral response measurements. Relative measurements can easily be scaled to calibrated currents for different spectral irradiances.

All calculations are done by using the ASTM G173 reference solar spectral tables. PHOTOR has a license agreement with the ASTM organisation to use these tables. Measurements are stored in project files which can be processed on- and off-line.

PHOTOR provides the connector protocols for the most popular databases:
SQL server
Oracle
MySQL

Standard functions included with PHOTOR are:
Quantum efficiency
Spectral response
Mismatch factor
Short circuit current for different ASTM standard
