CCD detectors for the quality control of solar cells

Due to production processes solar cells often show local defects, that may affect their life time and efficiency. To characterize these defects better and faster, the determination of the electroluminescence of cells is becoming ever more important. An electric current of a few hundred mA in silicon creates a low-intensity light emission between 950 and 1200 nm.

Detectors that are sensitive for these wavelengths are so-called Deep Depletion CCDs with an optimized quantum efficiency of over 90% in the NIR.
